On our way to the Frio River, one of my favorite places on the way is a stretch through Mason, Tx. This is where I got my “Rattle Rock Road” image on a previous trip over the Summer of 2013. My sister Pee-Wee and I, always want to stop and check out these old antique stores, but they aren’t open or we are so hell bent to get to the Frio, we just don’t stop when they are open. And we have husbands….stop and shop ain’t happening.

The trip to the Frio River September 2013, I had my head buried in my laptop, working on my art and missed this little stretch until all the sudden, my sister and brother and law in the other car we were following, pulled over. Here we were at this store and for the last 150 miles I had been in my digital world. It was like waking up after falling asleep in the car and wondering how you got there. Sure enough, my brother in law said as we bailed out of the car, “Your sister wants to stop here, so here we are!” High five, Pee-Wee!

We go inside and as my sister put it, it was like walking in and seeing this collection of memories. Every corner and every pile was so organized and neatly laid out in this place that feels like it is in the middle of nowhere. The “things” are endless and generations old. I went up to the second floor using the red spiral staircase in the corner, holding on for dear life, because EVERYTHING about this building is old and twisted and out of kilter. Laid out upstairs were long cut scraps of dull carpet like paths over tin tiles nailed to the wood floor where you could see through the cracks down to the first floor. Every step was a snap, crackle, pop.

And then as I headed to the back of the store on the second floor, there was this ramp that led down into more of a twisting maze of memories and treasures lost waiting to be found. Literally, thousands of things and each thing had it’s place and this ramp that led down into the abyss was lit up from underneath and wonky jawed with this crazy jumbled dresser and colorful strips of carpet…and the light through the metal and wood made me stop dead in my tracks. It was like Alice in Wonderland. Every corner was something new and colorful and lit up and in it’s “spot”. And at the top of the ramp, I was in my spot too, if just for a moment, before going down into the rabbit hole, like Alice in Wonderland.

Update as of 11/2/13: People have asked me where this was. I had no idea because I was buried in my laptop and looked up as we pulled into the parking lot and just went in. No clue. So after some digging on the internet and calling around Mason, I finally found out! I spoke with a really nice lady named Brenda at the Fort Mason Outpost Guest House. She knew exactly the place I was talking about, Country Collectibles, right off Tx Hwy 29 on Ft. McKavitt St. in Mason, Tx. I spoke for sometime to Marilin and I knew I definitely had the right place! Stop by and see them sometime, you never know what you are going to find.
